Study of Laguna Beach
Brief:
Create 10 final images that work together thematically. You are required to brainstorm for a project concept, research the concept, and write a brief proposal that describes your concept and relates it to the photographers you’ve discovered through research
Proposal:

Final Description:
Every two weeks, my father enjoys going to Laguna Beach in Orange County, California on the morning weekends to get fresh air. Oftentimes, I find myself tagging along and I have grown to enjoy Laguna Beach myself. I wanted to share the experience and do a texture study of Laguna Beach. There are two main photos of the beach which captures its beauty. One of them is more focused on the beach wave, while the other is focused more on the sand. The other photos are texture studies of what I find at the beach. The portfolio is divided by textures of the water and by textures of the sand.

One of my main influences is Edward Weston’s works, specifically Point Lobos. Weston, an American photographer, is famously known for producing sharply focused images of natural forms and landscapes. For Point Lobos, Weston photographed a lot of closeups of nature which captured their unique textures. With Weston in mind, I captured many closeups of nature. For example, there is a closeup of the waves hitting against a rock which produces an interesting texture.

Another of my influences is Group f.64. This group of photographers consisted of 11 famous photographers such as Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Edward Weston. The group was trying to capture the “innate honesty” of the camera with natural subjects. They promoted a style of sharply detailed, pure photography. With my beach photography, I captured the detailed portions of the beach and didn’t want to change too much of the photo which creates an innate honesty.

Lastly, my work was also inspired by William Eggleston who is famous for using bright colors. He changed the way we view photos from boring to vivid colors. To keep the beautiful colors of Laguna Beach, I increased the saturation of most photos
